RAS head charged over Tempe railway accident

The Larissa Prosecutor's Office has filed charges against the head of the Regulatory Authority for Railways (RAS) in connection with the fatal Tempe train crash, following a recommendation from the appellate investigator. The charges include intentional and repeated disruption of transportation safety through omission.

New safeguards

The recriminations between state-run railway company OSE and the Regulatory Authority for Railways as to who was (not) adequately inspecting staff training is in itself a clear evidence of a system failure.

Railway market is all but closed

Despite two private companies being granted licenses to operate railway services last year, Greece has not yet fulfilled its obligation as a member of the European Union to open up the domestic market to anyone interested in entering the passenger and freight rail industry.
