Greeks were asked in 2023 to dig deep into their pockets for medicine, with private spending increasing significantly year on year.

As revealed by the latest report of the Economic and Industrial Research Foundation (IOBE), which is conducted every year with the cooperation of the Hellenic Association of Pharmaceutical Companies (SfEE), the total amount of expenditure paid by citizens (institutionalized participation and direct payments) for pharmaceutical care in 2023, amounted to 1.8 billion euros.

In more detail, according to the data presented at yesterday’s press conference, the institutionalized participation of patients in 2023 amounted to 434 million euros, while the burden resulting from the difference between retail and insurance price amounted to 300 million euros.

Patient participation totals EUR 734 million and is increased compared to 2022 by EUR 45 million (EUR 689 million in 2022).
