Terrifying incidents before Botafogo – Pensiarol: Fans set coach on fire, 200 arrests

Hundreds of fans of Uruguay’s Penarol created riots on the waterfront in Rio de Janeiro on Wednesday (Jan 23), setting fire to a bus and vandalizing beach pavilions, Brazilian police said.

The riots lasted more than an hour until police restored order involving at least 200 Uruguayans, Rio governor Claudio Castro said.

Uruguayan fans had arrived by bus for the first semi-final of the Libertadores Cup between Penial and Botafogo.

According to police, the riots started when a Uruguayan fan was arrested for stealing a mobile phone at a bakery in the Recreio Beach area on the west side of the city.

Angry Uruguayan fans moved to the beach, knocking down pavilions, overturning tables and starting hand-to-hand fights with locals. They damaged parked cars and set fire to motorbikes.

“Rio is no place for trouble. I ordered the police to arrest them, take them to the police station and then escort them out of Rio. We have already arrested more than 200,” Castro said on social media.

“We will not allow these criminals to come and disrupt the daily lives of residents with such atrocities and vandalism.” Penial fans had set up with police on the same beach before a match against Flamengo last month.

In 2019, a Flamengo fan was killed in a clash between fans of Penial and Flamengo in Rio.
