Harris or Trump? America’s attention to Greece has waned

As the world holds its breath over the outcome of the US presidential elections, how strong are the ties that bind the US and Greece together?

Of course, there are certain fundamentals that underpin bilateral relations. The sale of US fighter aircraft to Greece (or to Turkey) can be a barometer of how favorably Washington views its security allies. Greece's security has a very important US dimension, and its NATO membership sets an agenda for the country, as with Ukraine. Rather more symbolically, the very successful speech Kyriakos Mitsotakis gave before both houses of Congress in May 2022 suggests the warmth of the relationship between the two countries. In other spheres, the flow of Greek students to US universities - and the significance of their alumni associations in Athens - indicates how individual aspirations can be tied to the US.
