WWF warns fires destroy more than tall trees

Greece's annual forest fires have again ignited a debate over the true scale of devastation. WWF Hellas has challenged official claims that damage was limited to smaller areas of mature forest, arguing that total burned land this season aligns with averages of the past 20 years - reaching nearly 50,000 hectares.

WWF stresses that counting only "high forests" understates the broader ecosystem loss, including areas crucial for regeneration.

At the same time, Climate Minister Vassilis Kikilias announced new five-year contracts for seasonal firefighters, but resisted calls for year-round employment, frustrating many frontline workers. Age limits for firefighting roles remain at 40, while drivers may serve up to age 50, with experience-based points benefiting veteran firefighters.
