Plans for more farmers at open-air markets

Talks between the government and farmers on facilitating their ease of access to markets are in the final stages, General Secretary for Trade and Consumer Protection Sotiris Anagnostopoulos said on Sunday.

He noted that the government wants an increase in options available to consumers and greater competition to drive down prices, while it aims to ease the consumers' direct access to farmers.

Proposals include a greater number of farmers at markets, known in Greece as 'laikes' - i.e. people's markets - and the possibility of evening markets. Currently, these open-air markets include a mix of farmers and traders.
