Syntagma Square Christmas tree lighting ceremony set for Thursday

The Christmas tree lighting ceremony in Athens' Syntagma Square will take place this Thursday, signaling the start of a series of events throughout the city.

Athens Mayor Haris Doukas will illuminate the 20-meter fir tree during an event featuring Christmas melodies performed by Nefeli Fasouli and the Athens Big Band.

"This Christmas in Athens will feel like a fairy tale," said Doukas, adding that "a grand celebration will begin in the heart of the city. Neighborhoods across Athens and iconic landmarks will be illuminated for the first time."

"We invite everyone to join us on Thursday at Syntagma Square to kick off the Christmas festivities with music and songs," he added.
