Man jailed over fatal hit and run

A 31-year-old man who killed a 15-year-old girl in a hit and run while driving under the influence of alcohol in October 2022 has been sentenced to 12.5 years' imprisonment by a Thessaloniki court.

The court found him guilty of drunk driving, speeding and of leaving the scene of the accident, which occurred in the Paleochora settlement in Imathia, northern Greece, in which the girl's 11-year-old sister and their mother were also injured.

The court heard that the defendant, who was speeding at over 90 kmph and performing dangerous maneuvers, lost control of his car, resulting in it leaving the road and dragging the two girls and their mother who were walking on the side of the road.

The 15-year-old girl who died in the incident was thrown 32 meters from the point of impact.
