ATHEX: Fifth straight day of gains for benchmark
Early profit-taking at Athinon Avenue gave way to a fresh wave of buying later on Thursday - although banks appeared to have fallen out of favor - taking the benchmark higher for the fifth session in a row. The market is now confidently looking toward more growth, boosted also by the significant increase in daily trading volumes.
Georgian national kills himself in Alexandroupoli police cell
A detainee at a police station in the northeastern Greek city of Alexandroupoli was found hanged on Thursday in his cell.
According to reports, the dead man was a 46-year-old Georgian national who ended his life using bed linen with which he had made a noose.
He had been arrested in connection with migrant/refugee trafficking and was due to stand trial in the coming days.
Reprehensible conservatism in education
Whenever we received our report card from school back in my day, the last thing we cared about was the conduct grade of "excellence" we all received. We never knew anyone who received a grade of "decent." We could not understand why there were only two grades, but what we didn't know because it was so rare was that there was also a third one: "reprehensible."
Embassy reacts to US envoy's Russia remarks
The Russian Embassy in Athens on Thursday reacted to comments by US Ambassador Geoffrey Pyatt who said that problems in bilateral relations between NATO allies Greece and Turkey would benefit Moscow.
"The comments made by the American ambassador to Athens… are nonsense," the Russian Embassy tweeted in Greek.
Turkey to lift inter-city travel restrictions and open cafes, parks on June 1
President Tayyip Erdoğan said on May 28 Turkey will lift restrictions on intercity travel and allow restaurants, cafes, parks and sports facilities to reopen from June 1 as it eases restrictions imposed to curb the coronavirus outbreak.
Following a cabinet meeting, he said that restrictions would remain place on the movements of those aged over 65 and under 18.
Greek American running for statewide office in Delaware
Greek American Spiros Mantzavinos is running for a statewide office in Delaware and is widely seen as the favorite.
The State Senate seat in Delaware's 7th District for which he is running as a Democrat has been labeled as one of the most flippable in the country. Registered voters for his party outnumber his opponent's by nearly two-to-one.
