Daycare workers suspended for locking toddlers in storage room

Two daycare workers at a nursery in the port city of Alexandroupolis, northern Greece, were suspended and an inquiry has been opened by the municipal authorities after they were accused of locking children in a storage room to discipline them. 

The two female former employees of the city's 2nd Nursery are also expected to be summoned by an examining magistrate on Monday.

Deadly Evros wildfire enters 13th day as firefighters struggle to contain it

The European Union's largest wildfire since the bloc started keeping records continued to rage for the 13th straight day in northeastern Greece on Thursday burning a pristine forest in the Dadia National Park.

The blaze has already burned around 81,000 hectares (200,000 acres) of land, according to the European Union's Copernicus Emergency Management Service.

A forest fire in Greece is the largest recorded in the European Union, said a spokesman for the European Commission, quoted by "Guardian" and "AFP".

Eleven aircraft and a helicopter from the EU fleet have been sent to help fight the fire north of the city of Alexandroupolis along with 407 firefighters, Balazs Ujvari said on Tuesday.

Bulgaria: The State of Emergency remains in Chepelare municipality

The partial state of emergency declared in Chepelare municipality remains in force due to the large fire near the village of Hvojna.

During the night, teams of the fire brigade were on duty on the spot, and the deputy mayor of Chepelare Stoyan Kuzmov called on the volunteers who want to help in extinguishing the fire - to be in the town today at 8 a.m.
