Shipyard worker dies in accident

A 40-year-old worker died Saturday afternoon at Chalkis Shipyards in the city of Halkida, north of Ahens, when hit by a part of a ship's shell door that broke off.

The accident happened around 4 p.m. Saturday. The man died instantly.

The Halkida Port Authority is investigating the accident.

 

Suburban railway inaugurating new services on Monday

The Proastiakos suburban railway will add four new services as of Monday on the section connecting Athens to Halkida on the southern coast of Evia, according to railway operator Trainose.

From Athens there will be additional services at 5.51 a.m. and 3.51 p.m., while two additional services will depart from Halkida to Athens at 7.26 a.m. and 5.26 p.m.

PM pays respects to Mytaras, Kounellis

Greek politicians on Friday paid their respects following the deaths on Thursday of two of Greece's most important 20th century painters: Dimitris Mytaras, aged 83, and Jannis Kounellis, aged 80.

Writing on Twitter on Friday, Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras described Mytaras as "an important and great representative of the Greek visual arts."

Light tremor hits Preveza

The coastal town of Preveza in northwestern Greece was rattled by a 3.7 magnitude tremor Tuesday.

According to the Athens Geodynamic Institute the quake occurred at a depth of five kilometers below the seabed near Aktio.

The tremor was felt in nearby Lefkada island and the Aitoloakarnania region.
