Tech giants buying out local startups

Big US tech companies are snapping up Greek startups, integrating their technology and their small teams into their own projects.

Just this year, there have been nine acquisitions of Greek startups by companies such as Cisco, Dell and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. 

Cisco has acquired Code BGP, a 2-year-old startup which, besides its three founders, employs six other people.

Nursing home owner arrested on Crete

A 60-year-old owner of a nursing home on Crete has been arrested following a search of the facility.

Acting on complaints about the living conditions in the home, the lack of cleanliness, lack of supervision as well as the bad conditions of the building, police visited the institution, which is located in Iraklio, on Tuesday morning.

Woman arrested, fined for running over dog 

A 63-year-old woman was arrested and fined for running over a dog with her car in the city of Iraklio, Crete, police said on Saturday.

The incident took place on Thursday afternoon and was caught on a street camera. Officers identified the driver, detained her and ordered her to pay 40,500 euros for willfully injuring and causing bodily harm to a pet. 

Iraklio man ‘pimped out 11-year-old’

A 66-year-old man has been arrested in connection with a case involving a 15-year-old boy in the city of Iraklio on the island of Crete.

The suspect allegedly pimped the child over a four-year period from the age of 11.

Moreover, he allegedly sexually abused the boy at regular intervals using threats between 2020 until the present.

Serb tourism puts Crete in focus

Cyber attack on PM’s office, state bodies attributed to foreign spies

The Prime Minister's office, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Intelligence Service (EYP) and the Hellenic Police (ELAS) were the targets of an international cyber espionage campaign in April 2019 code-named "Sea Turtle."

According to verified sources, the unknown perpetrators were able to gain access to the internal networks of government agencies.

Citizens, businesses largely abiding by anti-smoking law

It was long in coming but widespread enforcement of the anti-smoking law now appears to be a reality in Greece.

The data collected jointly by the National Transparency Authority and Greek Police from inspections indicates that the overwhelming majority of citizens and businesses are complying with the law.
