NATO is set to boost border surveillance to protect its member Turkey from possible threats coming from neighboring war-torn Syria.

Two people have been killed, including a toddler, while two others have been wounded as eight Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) rocket projectiles hit the southeastern border province of Kilis. The military fired back at ISIL targets within the rules of engagement. 

Turkey detained 29 Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) suspects, including 14 children, during an attempt to infiltrate Turkish territory from Syria, Turkish Armed Forces has announced. 

Unlike many Turkish provinces that have received Syrian refugees in large numbers, one hardly sees child beggars on the streets of Kilis in Turkey's south, as the governorate exerted effort to school minors.

Security officials have stated that Turkey began shelling positions of Syria's Democratic Union Party (PYD) militias due to the fear that the PYD's capture of Azaz, a critical town in the Syrian conflict, could spark a new refugee influx towards the Turkish border.

A sense of brotherhood resembling the early Muslims has developed between Syrians living in the southeastern province of Kilis and local Turkish residents as the number of Syrians has come to exceed the population of Turks in the town.

It's almost like a bad joke.

A deputy head of Turkey's ruling party has filed an application with the Norwegian Nobel Committee to nominate the southeastern province of Kilis for the Nobel Peace Prize given that it is now hosting as many Syrians as its total population, the state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

Slabs of concrete wall have sprung up and military patrols have intensified, but local people say this stretch of Turkey's border facing Syrian territory under Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) control is still far from water-tight.

A rocket fired from Syria on Jan. 23 slammed into the town of Kilis on the Turkish side of the border, wounding two people, reports said, quoting the local governorate.

The rocket hit a street causing an explosion that damaged nearby buildings and wounded an 18-year-old youth and a 14-year-old Syrian refugee girl, the semi-official Anadolu Agency said.
