Several bronze statuettes depicting ancient deities Dionysus, Eros, and Cupid are among the most intriguing artifacts discovered during the 2017 archaeological excavations of the Ancient Roman city of Serdica in the downtown of today's Bulgarian capital Sofia.

Archaeologists hypothesize they may have discovered the 3rd-4th century AD coin mint of the Ancient Roman city of Serdica, the predecessor of today's Bulgarian capital Sofia, as a result of ongoing digs in Sofia's very downtown.

Work was in full swing at the building site of the first Hyatt hotel in Bulgaria, in the centre of the capital, Sofia, on Monday, Balkaninsight reported. 

While numerous machines laid concrete and strengthened the foundations of the future 190-room five-star hotel, a team of archaeologists with an excavator was carefully digging a rare find out of the ground.

Bulgarian archaeologists discovered an ancient Roman hoard consisting of 2976 silver denarii coins during excavations works at Saint Nedelya square in downtown Sofia.

The coins were found in a ceramic vessel, which bears the name of its last owner inscribed on one of its sides, Cross news agency informs.

Bulgarian archaeologists discovered a unique, richly decorated, 1600-year-old mosaic during excavation works in downtown Sofia at the site of the ancient Roman city of Serdica.

The mosaic, which was uncovered below a concrete supporting block under the central Dondukov boulevard, has six colours and is made of natural elements.

Archaeologists are to start in 2015 excavations under Sofia's Sveta Nedelia Square in search of 3 government buildings of the ancient city of Serdica.

Field research is set to begin next spring, according to the Bulgarian capital's Deputy Mayor, Todor Chobanov as quoted by the Monitor daily.
