A 40-year-old man who was paragliding near Thessaloniki has died after crashing into a hill in an inaccessible area.

The incident occurred near the village of Vasilika, about 30 kilometers southeast of Thessaloniki.

Fifteen firefighters and members of the mountain search and rescue team found the body but attempts at resuscitation were unsuccessful.

A 4.5 magnitude earthquake occurred on Monday in northern Evia.

According to the automated solution, the earthquake’s epicenter was located 7 km southeast of the village of Vasilika in Istiaia, with a focal depth of 5 km.

The tremor was strongly felt in northern Evia, even reaching as far as Athens.

The epicenter of the quake was located 4 km northwest of the town of Vasilika.

Few minutes earlier, at 8.56 p.m. a 3.9 magnitude earthquake occurred 5 km northwest from the town of Vasilika.

Fears of a new spate of deaths caused by the increased use of wood-fired heaters and braziers amid the latest cold snap peaked on Thursday following the death of two elderly residents of Lesvos this week.

On Wednesday, rescue workers recovered the remains of a 90-year-old woman from her home in the village of Vasilika in central Lesvos after her heater started a fire.
