Following weeks of uncertainty in which the Bucharest government considered withdrawing its application for UNESCO protection for Rosia Montana, a former gold mine dating from Roman times, the UN cultural heritage agency declared it a World Heritage site on Tuesday.

The move came as a relief to conservation groups who oppose the resumption of mining in the area.

A day after Canadian mining company Eldorado Gold suspended its activities at Skouries in northern Greece, Lamda Development, which is leading a consortium of investors that aims to turn the site of the capital's former airport into a luxury real estate plot, warned that the future of the Elliniko project is in doubt due to a series of obstacles thrown up by government officials. 

The decision by the Central Archaeological Council (CAC) on Wednesday to pospone its final verdict on whether the area of the former airport at Hellinikon in Attica was an archaeological site delivered a serious blow tio the Greek government.

Following the launch of a "constructive dialogue" with the government, Canadian mining company Eldorado Gold said on Thursday that it would not suspend its operations in northern Greece as it had threatened earlier this month.

Workers for the Greek subsidiary of Canadian miner Eldorado Gold were staging a protest at the Environment and Energy Ministry in northern Athens and headed into the city center on Thursday morning, resulting in major roads being closed to traffic.

A group of gold mining workers from the Cassandra mining plant in Chalkidiki stormed the Energy Ministry a little after 8.30am on Wednesday and are currently occupying the premises. Police swat teams units have arrived on the scene to prevent the remaining protesters outside the Ministry from entering the building.
