European Stability Mechanism

The price of delusion

Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras does not seem to tire of saying the same thing over and over again. He claims that, in 2015, his government took over a country that was bankrupt. He forgets to mention that Greece's debt is higher today than it was then.

ESM confirms release of tranche to Greece in principle

The European Stability Mechanism's board of directors on Friday approved, in principle, the release of the final bailout tranche to Greece, worth 15 billion euros.

In a statement released on Friday, the ESM's board said that the sum would be disbursed to Greece "subject to the completion of national procedure."

Tranche will have strings attached

The European Stability Mechanism is tying up Greece's cash buffer with safety clauses, to ensure that those funds are only used for the purpose they are intended for - and not handouts.

This stems from the ESM proposal on the terms of the final 15-billion-euro tranche to Greece as tabled in the German parliament along with the rest of the Eurogroup agreement's texts.

Short-dated Greek government bond yields fell on Tuesday after the euro zone bailout fund approved new loans for the indebted country.

The European Stability Mechanism said it approved the disbursement of 6.7 billion euros in new loans to Greece as part of its current bailout program.
