Dragoljub Simonovic, the former president of the Belgrade municipality of Grocka and a member of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party, SNS, has been sentenced to five years in prison for inciting other persons to jeopardize the life of journalist Milan Jovanovic.

The editor-in-chief and owner of the daily newspaper Dan, well known for his opposition to the then government, was shot dead on leaving his office in Podgorica on May 27, 2004. He had received numerous death threats.

The court sentenced him to six months in prison but ruled that Jovanovic can pay a fine of 6,700 euros instead of serving the sentence, which his defence agreed to do.

The Kosovo prosecution accuses Jovanovic of the criminal offence of "inciting discord and intolerance".

Namely, a member of the ruling Montenegrin coalition asked the Montenegrin government to demand of its "partners from Kosovo" the immediate release of Risto Jovanovi, who was arrested in Gazimestan yesterday.
