Reading the Barack Obama interview by Thomas Friedman in the New York Times, I have come to the conclusion that we still do not know how to go from diagnosis to policy action. That makes us woefully unprepared for what is happening in the Middle East.

Last airman in US bombing of Hiroshima dies: Media

The last surviving crewman of the Enola Gay – the U.S. plane that dropped the first atomic bomb on Japan near the end of World War II – has died.

Theodore Van Kirk, also known as “Dutch,” died on July 28 of natural causes at the Park Springs Retirement Community in Stone Mountain, Georgia, NBC television reported. Van Kirk was 93.

New York Times calls for marijuana legalization

The New York Times called for the legalization of marijuana on Saturday, in a bold editorial comparing the federal ban on cannabis to Prohibition.
      
The prestigious publication said pot laws disproportionately impact young black men and that addiction and dependence are "relatively minor problems" -- especially when compared with alcohol and tobacco.        

Gaza’s right to defend itself

As I sat down to write this piece, the so-called “Operation Protective Edge” by the Israeli army had killed at least 425 Palestinians in the Gaza Strip. The majority of these casualties were civilians, including more than a 100 children, according to the figures by The New York Times. In return, some 13 Israeli soldiers were killed in addition to two Israeli civilians.

US actor Eli Wallach dead at 98: report

The prolific American actor Eli Wallach, known by many for his role in the western "The Good, the Bad and the Ugly" as part of a career spanning six decades, has died at the age of 98, US media reports said.
      
The New York Times said Wallach's death Tuesday was confirmed by his daughter Katherine. The cause of death was not given.
