Court arrests HDP MP Besime Konca on terror charges

A court in the southeastern province of Batman on May 29 ordered the arrest of Kurdish-issue focused Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) Siirt lawmaker Besime Konca on terror charges, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Earlier in the day, Konca was detained at Batman Airport following a prosecutor's detention warrant that came shortly after her release earlier this month.

Jailed HDP lawmaker Özkan requests to reunite with three-year-old daughter in jail

A jailed Kurdish-issue focused Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) member has applied to the Justice Ministry to unite with her three-year-old daughter in prison, Doğan News Agency reported on May 24.

HDP Muş lawmaker Burcu Çelik Özkan was arrested on charges of "being a member of a terrorist organization" on April 19 in the eastern province of Muş.

The YSK's decision came after an unscheduled meeting on May 3. 

Thousands mark May Day in Turkey

Thousands of people have marked May 1 International Workers' Day in Turkey, with police detaining dozens of protesters during the events.

The official demonstrations in Istanbul were held in the Bakırköy district after the authorities banned celebrations from being held in Taksim Square. 

The police presence was heavy across the city, with helicopters buzzing overhead.

Turkey's supreme election board announces official charter referendum results

Turkey's Supreme Election Board (YSK) published the official results of the April 16 referendum on constitutional amendments in the Official Gazette on late April 27.     

Voters went to the polls on April 16 to decide whether to approve changes to the country's constitution, which also includes a shift from the current parliamentary system to an executive presidency.      

A nightmare scenario for Turkey

The nightmare scenario starts with the ruling Justice and Development Party (AK Parti) submitting a proposal to parliament to reinstate the death penalty.

This can either be done by Prime Minister Binali Yildirim after repeated demands by President Tayyip Erdogan, or it can be initiated by Erdogan himself after rejoining the AK Parti, as enabled by the April 16 referendum.
