Justice Phillip Mott has ruled that taxpayers should hand £27,000 to an illegal migrant convicted for attempted rape because he was held in immigration detention for too long while the authorities tried unsuccessfully to deport him.

West African troops were ready to intervene in Gambia on Jan. 19 after President Yahya Jammeh's mandate expired and overnight talks to convince him to stand down failed. 

Gambia's President-elect Adama Barrow was set to be sworn into office on Jan. 19 at the Gambian embassy in neighboring Senegal, while there was no word from Jammeh.

Authorities in Ghana busted a fake U.S. embassy in the capital Accra run by a criminal network that for a decade issued illegally obtained authentic visas, the U.S. State Department said.
