Scope Ratings upgrades Greece to ‘BBB’

Scope Ratings credit rating agency upgraded on Friday the Greek economy to "BBB" with a stable outlook, from "BBB-" with a positive outlook.

Scope was the first agency recognized by the European Central Bank to give Greece investment grade in August 2023 and is now the first to upgrade its creditworthiness within investment grade.

OECD against low VAT rates

In its report for Greece, the OECD recommends reductions in the use of low rates and exemptions currently in force for VAT, in tax exemptions and in the tax-free threshold applied to income. It also proposes increasing taxes on products such as tobacco, and imposing a special consumption tax on fat and salt.

Power subsidy set at just 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour

The increase in wholesale electricity rates has largely been absorbed this month by major power suppliers, including market leaders Public Power Corporation (PPC) and Protergia. As a result, the Energy Ministry announced on Friday a minimal subsidy for electricity bills, amounting to 1.5 cents per kilowatt-hour, covering nine out of 10 households in Greece for December.
