Number of Syrian refugees in Turkey exceeds one million

The number of Syrians taking refuge in Turkey has reached 1.05 million with no peaceful end in sight to the civil war-torn country, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Beşir Atalay said on June 19.

Atalay said a total of 22 camps in Turkey were hosting 218,632 refugees, with some camps hosting as many as 35,000-40,000 individuals.

Four policemen among suspects in migrant smuggling ring

Four police officers are among the 22 suspected members of a major migrant smuggling racket arrested this week, a police spokesman said on Friday.

Migrants detained off the coast of Lemnos

Coast guard officers intercepted 36 undocumented immigrants on Thursday off the coast of Lemnos in the eastern Aegean.

The officers seized the rubber dinghy in which the migrants had traveled to the island from neighboring Turkey and detained them.

Their ethnic origins remained unclear.
