Senate Speaker: Instead of moving toward normalcy, Ukraine situation drifting from bad to worse

Instead of moving towards stabilization and normalcy, the situation in Ukraine seems to drift from bad to worse, Senate Speaker Calin Popescu-Tariceanu said at the end of his meeting this Thursday with Georgian Minister of Foreign Affairs Maia Pandjikidze.

"During talks, we shared our common concern related to the evolution of the situation in Ukraine. News from there is rather confusing, but everything indicates clearly that instead of moving toward stabilization and returning to normalcy, the situation in Ukraine seems to drift from bad to worse. Faced with this situation, it is natural that Georgia and Romania express their concern. We are faced with a very sensitive situation and in this regard we also noted the request made by the Foreign Minister that a meeting of Romania's Supreme Council of National Defence — CSAT be called on this subject," Tariceanu declared at the Palace of Parliament.

He also reminded that Romania was the first country to sign the Association Agreement with Georgia.

"The Senate of Romania was the first Upper House of an EU member country to ratify the Association Agreement between the EU and Georgia. On July 18 the Georgian Parliament also ratified the Association Agreement, but on July 3 we wanted to give this strong message to the three new signatory states, indicating that Romania is one of the countries that consider this element of political orientation is important," said the Senate Speaker.

Tariceanu also showed that there is unanimity in the Georgian Parliament as regards the pro-European orientation that enjoys an equally broad popular support.
