Fuele: Serbian citizens committed to continuation of EU path

BRUSSELS - European Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele congratulated Serbia on the successfully conducted elections and underscored that the results prove that citizens are committed to the continuation of European integration.

In a release, Fuele congratulated Serbia on the early elections which, according to the assessments of observers, offered a genuine possibility to citizens to decide on grounds of healthy legal foundations.

He added that observers pointed to the need for further legal reforms concerning the electoral process, especially in terms of media pluralism, and called on the future government to implement steps to this end.

Fuele expressed satisfaction that the Serbian people once more confirmed the clear support to the government's continuous commitment to European integration.

He noted that by winning the absolute majority in the National Assembly, the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS) took on a major responsibility.

We welcome the intention of SNS leader Aleksandar Vucic to launch inclusive talks on prompt constitution of the government, Fuele said and recalled that the negotiations on Serbia's EU accession opened this year.

He warned that Serbia is to face difficult challenges in terms of structural reforms and further work on the establishment of rule of law.
“In addition to this, the dialogue on the normalisation of relations with Pristina needs to continue and the implementation of the agreements reached so far needs to be accelerated,” Fuele said.
