Pahor expects STA, prosecutor issues to be resolved before EU presidency

Brussels – President Borut Pahor has expressed the expectation that the government will have secured stable financing of the Slovenian Press Agency (STA) and resolved the appointment of European delegated prosecutors by the start of the country’s EU presidency.

Speaking to reporters in Brussels on Friday on the sidelines of his visit to EU institutions. Pahor said that these issues were solvable and that he counted on the government’s prudence.

After holding talks with heads of the main EU institutions, he said he expected that the government would soon secure stable financing of the STA, which he believes it deserves “in the light of the 30 years of invaluable mission that it performs.”

The president also expects a facilitated procedure to appoint Slovenia’s two European delegated prosecutors, as there is almost no excuse for an EU presiding country, which should be an example in this respect, not to do that during its presidency.

The Slovenian government decided last week to annul the procedure and publish a new call for applications, which prompted Justice Minister Lilijana Kozlovič to hand her resignation.

Pahor told Slovenian reporters in Brussels that he had discussed this openly with European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and European Parliament President David Sassoli.

“I expect from the government – which I cooperate with, for which I am being criticised by part of the public – to understand that there are certain things that now represent a challenge for our reputation on the eve of presidency, and to solve them.”

According to Pahor, this is expected by Slovenian people and institutions, as well as partners in the EU that trust Slovenia and still see it as a country that has made major steps forward in the past 30 years in many fields.
