Franci Novak wins award for best collection of short stories

Novo Mesto – Author Franci Novak received the award for the best collection of short stories at the Novo Mesto Short festival on Friday evening. He won the accolade for his work Obvoz (Detour).

Published by LUD Literatura last year, Obvoz is a collection imbued with lyrical prose whose author’s voice is distinctive and without any detours, said the jury.

Novak’s writing builds worlds that are distant as well as recognisable, in fact they are doppelgangers or mirrors of our worlds.

Although their magic includes the impressions of local working-class, suburban and rural milieux, which are presented in completely unexpected ways, these worlds establish their own physical laws somewhere between wakefulness and delirium, reads the justification.

The awards ceremony is the main event of the Novo Mesto Short festival, organised by the Goga publisher together with the Slovenian Association of Literary Critics. It aims to stress the importance of short fiction collections and to highlight short story writers.

Novo Mesto Short featured five days of storytelling evenings and a talk with the finalists. The festival will wrap up today with a conversation with the prize winner.
