Meteo: 37% of Attica’s forests burned in the last 8 years

Disturbing results emerge from the updated analysis of the burnt areas from forest fires of the last 8 years (2017-present) in the continental part of the Attica Region.

Between 2017 and 13 August 2024, 13 major wildfires have burned more than 700,000 acres according to reports from the Copernicus Rapid Mapping Service and the European Forest Fire Observatory (EFFIS).

The perimeter of the burnt areas is given in the map below:

Perimeter of burned areas in the Attica Region from 2017 to date. Shades of red and pink indicate areas burned in 2023 and 2024 (as of 8/13) and yellow and orange indicate areas burned in the previous 8 years. In grey colour the wider area of the Attica basin is marked

The total area of the Region of Attica (excluding the area of Troizinia, the islands and the basin) is 2,500,000 hectares, so in the last 8 years 26% of the total area has been burnt by forest fires. In the Region of Attica, the surface area of forest areas is about 1,230,000 hectares and in the last 8 years 450,000 hectares of forest have been burnt, i.e. 37% of the forest area. The recent fire that started in Varnavas, Attica, and reached the residential area of the Attica basin, burned a large part of the forest area of Northeast Attica.
