Commission: Two-month deadline for Greece to comply with railway safety laws
The European Commission has called on Greece to comply with the European Union's directive for railway safety in a letter of formal notice.
The directive covers safety requirements on the railway system as a whole, such as revising the role of national safety authorities and reallocating responsibilities between them and the European Union Agency for Railways.
The Commission said that while the Greek government adopted an action plan and "there is good progress" in its implementation, "the shortcomings in the implementation…continue to persist."
"There have been longstanding shortcomings in the implementation of a relevant directive since its entry into force. The failings are dubbed as systemic that stem from a lack of safety culture within the organizations involved," the Commission said.
Greece now has two months to comply with the safety rules.
