Celebrity UK Immigrant Promotes pro-European Party
Victor Spirescu, the first Romanian to arrive in Britain on January 1 after the lifting of remaining work restrictions on Romanians, is now promoting a new pro-EU party in Britain founded by UK-resident Romanians, the UK's Channel 4 TV reports.
The Europeans Party has been established in London “as a consequence of the wave of negative reactions in the UK, which have been taken to the extreme against the European Union and its citizens”, according to its website.
Spirescu, a founding member and mascot of the party, said he was “disappointed that while working in London I got less money compared to the British despite the fact that I was working more”.
For his part, Tommy Tomescu, the leader of the Europeans Party and a dentist by profession, said one of his main aims was to promote and develop EU citizenship rights amongst all EU citizens and countries.
Spirescu, a 30-year-old-from Transylvania, briefly become a media star after touching down at Luton airport in the UK on January 1, when a waiting posse of journalists and British politicians demanded to know whether he was coming to the UK in search of benefits.
He since lost his job as a car washer but has found new work in construction.
Predictions that huge numbers of Romanians would flood into the UK when work restrictions were lifted have proved largely unfounded.
As of January 1, Romanians and Bulgarian no longer need work permits for employment in any EU country.
However, under pressure from the media, the UK has now banned new arrivals from claiming benefits for their first three months in the country.
