No ordinary resignation for Istanbul

Under normal circumstances, in a normal news cycle, the resignation of Istanbul Mayor Kadir Topbaş should have been in the headlines throughout all subsequent days. But it had already become common news in pro-government news outlets on the morning of Sept. 22, and he waited until 7:00 p.m. that evening to announce it.

Germany 'rejects 5,000 Turkish asylum applications'

Germany's immigration authority has rejected more than 5,000 asylum applications filed by Turkish citizens, local media reported on Sept. 13. 

German daily Tagesspiegel reported that the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (BAMF) had ruled on 8,547 asylum applications in 2017 filed by Turkish citizens, and rejected 5,040 of them.

Turkey sent a diplomatic note to Germany on Aug. 16 over Adil Öksüz, a runaway suspect thought to be the civilian leader of the Gülen movement in the Air Force, following reports that he was seen in Germany, according to diplomatic sources. 

Detention issued for 33 ex-employees of Turkey's top scientific body over Gülen links

The Ankara Chief Public Prosecutor's Office on Aug. 15 issued detention warrants for 33 former employees of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) as part of its probe into the Fetullahist Terrorist Organization (FETÖ).
