"The German Consulate General will remain closed today, February 1, for security reasons," the consulate wrote on its Instagram page. Visa and passport appointments were also cancelled.

Alarm was raised over suspicious package delivered to the German Consulate in Istanbul’s Gümüşsuyu district on Dec. 14, however its contents turned out only to be candies and cologne, Doğan News Agency has reported.

President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has accused Germany of abetting terrorists while vowing that he will continue to make "Nazi" comparisons until Berlin hands over thousands of "terror criminals" that Turkey has long been demanding from the country. 

A mortar shell thought to be around 70 years old was found in the garden of the German Consulate residence in Istanbul on Nov. 21, Turkey's state-run Anadolu Agency has reported.

A German school operating under the German consulate in Istanbul will be closed on March 21 during the annual Nevruz celebrations due to security concerns after the deadly Istanbul suicide bomb attack on March 19.

According to German media, the decision to send children to nurseries or schools was left to parents until the Easter holiday, which will begin on March 25.

The German Embassy in Ankara and the German Consulate in Istanbul have remained closed for a second day over the threat of a possible attack after German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said they had received very serious intelligence about a possible terror attack against German missions in Turkey on March 17.
