Israel hits Gaza as tensions surge on Lebanon border

Israeli forces struck Gaza and battled Hamas militants on Friday as truce efforts failed to make progress and tensions surged on Israel's northern border with Lebanon.

Witnesses reported strikes on the southern city of Rafah and central areas of the Gaza Strip.

Türkiye has condemned an Israeli attack on a Gaza refugee camp that reportedly resulted in the deaths of 210 Palestinians and left hundreds more wounded, according to Hamas-run media.

"We deplore the Israeli attack on the Nuseirat refugee camp in Gaza, which has killed hundreds of Palestinian civilians," Türkiye's Foreign Ministry said in a statement on June 9.

UNRWA chief says Israel hit Gaza school 'without warning'

The U.N. Palestinian refugee agency's chief said Thursday that Israel had carried out a strike on one of its Gaza schools "without prior warning" to thousands of displaced sheltering there.

"Another UNRWA school turned shelter attacked," Philippe Lazzarini wrote on social media platform X, adding that the agency had earlier provided Israeli forces with the building's coordinates.

Mohammad Hammud, in his late 70s, was at home with his wife in a south Lebanon border village when Israeli bombing hit. This time, the attack was different.

"Fire broke out in front of the house... there was a strange smell... we had trouble breathing," he told AFP by telephone from his village of Hula.
