Lavrov: Russia won't stop Syria strikes until 'terrorists' defeated

Russia will not stop its air strikes on Syria until armed groups, such as al-Qaeda's wing there, are defeated, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Feb. 3. 

On Feb. 2, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said that Russia should stop bombing opposition forces in Syria now that U.N.-led peace talks have started.

US Journalist Held Hostage in Syria Freed from Captivity

An American journalist held hostage in Syria by a militant group linked to al-Qaida was released on Sunday.

The release of Peter Theo Curtis, 45, had been facilitated by the Gulf emirate of Qatar. It came just days after the barbaric execution of American reporter James Foley by Islamic militants.

Jihadist Threat to Europe Worries Macedonia

Interior Minister Jankulovska says hard-line Islamists returning to Europe after fighting in Syria pose a danger to the whole continent.

“Four Macedonian citizens already died in Syria, which is a strong indicator that this problem is expanding,” Jankulovska said.

“This is not a problem isolated in a single country but a problem threatening all of Europe,” she added.
