All elections are important, but these are critical. The worst may be behind us, but the danger of a governance vacuum and chaos loom.

It is up to the voters to ensure political stability and not to trigger a new crisis by the way in which they cast their ballot. New Democracy and the other parties that are clearly pro-Europe cannot come out of this contest broken.

Leftist SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras on Friday called on voters to bring Greece closer to change as opinion polls suggested that his party was leading conservative New Democracy by between 1 and 4.3 percentage points.

In his last campaign speech before Sunday's European Parliament and local elections, Prime Minister Antonis Samaras admitted on Friday that a SYRIZA victory might bring the government down but implored voters to back New Democracy and ensure Greece does not “turn back.”

A Public Issue survey for Efimerida ton Syntakton newspaper put the leftists on 30 percent against 27.5 percent for the conservatives.

Three days before Greeks vote in the country’s second round of local elections, along with those for the European Parliament, the political system appears to have dropped the ball. The main reason is that municipal and regional candidates – especially in Athens and the Attica region – are seeking to extract Golden Dawn’s share in the runoff vote.
