Romania Jails Former Gulag Boss For 20 Years
A Romanian court on Wednesday sentenced former jail commander Ioan Ficior to 20 years in prison for the deaths of 103 political prisoners during the Communist regime.
He has 10 days to appeal.
This was the second trial of a head of a Communist-era lockup in Romania since dictator Nicolae Ceausescu was tried and executed in 1989.

Romania To Pay Damages Over 1989 Protests
Romania has been told to pay compensation to eight people of 2,400 euro each for the length of criminal proceedings in a case related to their ill-treatment in December 1989.
The European Court for Human Rights announced the ruling on Tuesday.

Romanian Ex-President Charged Over Protesters' Deaths
A Romanian court on Wednesday announced a criminal prosecution against former president Ion Iliescu for alleged crimes against humanity over the violent suppression of protests in 1990.
Iliescu was allegedly involved in the violent suppression of an opposition movement that organised protests in Bucharest for several weeks in mid-1990.
Romanian Court Rejects Oil Company's Insolvency Request
The Bucharest County court on Tuesday rejected the request for insolvency filed by the Romanian oil company Rompetrol SA, which is part of the Netherlands-based oil and gas group KMG International.
The reasoning of the judges had not been made public so far, but Rompetrol has seven days to appeal.
Romania Jails Former Railway Chief for Fraud
A Romanian court on Wednesday jailed Mihai Necolaiciuc, a former manager of the Romanian Railways Company, CFR, for ten years for abuse of office and embezzlement. Two other former railway officials were jailed for eight years in the same case.
The decision is not final and can be appealed.

Romania Expels Alleged Islamist Recruiters
A Romanian court has ruled that the alleged followers of the Islamic State group, ISIS, represented a danger to the security of the country and ordered their expulsion.
They were prohibited from returning to the country for between three to seven years, Romania's internal intelligence agency, SRI, said in a statement on Saturday.
