Commandos kill 25 jihadists in central Syria: Monitor

A commando operation backed by Russian warplanes and helicopters has killed 25 members of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in central Syria, a monitor said on Aug. 13.

Supported by regime ally Russia, Syria's army has waged a months-long offensive to recapture the vast desert region that stretches from the country's center to the Iraqi and Jordanian borders.

Israeli warplanes hit targets in Syria as tensions flare

Around 40,000 evacuated from Aleppo

Over 40,000 people have been evacuated from besieged parts of eastern Aleppo since efforts to allow people to leave began last week, Turkish Prime Minister Binali Yıldırım said Dec. 22, noting that the last batch of civilians was expected to be transported out of the city by the end of the day. 

Syria army retakes over half of rebel east Aleppo

Syria's army advanced overnight deeper into east Aleppo where it now controls more than half of the former rebel stronghold after a fierce assault that has sparked an international outcry.

Tens of thousands of civilians have fled eastern neighborhoods of the battered city since Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's regime began its latest offensive in mid-November.
