Thessaloniki extortionist who locked up cousins convicted
A 59-year-old civil servant was sentenced to 10 years and five months in prison by a Thessaloniki court on Tuesday after being found guilty of locking up his two cousins, aged 49 and 48, in an old two-story house for eight months and extorting a total of 82,000 euros from them to fund his daughter's university education.

Fugitive tried to sneak into Greece from FYROM with baby in luggage
A 33-year-old woman who tried to cross the Evzones border station into Greece from the Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia with her two-month baby in her luggage is a fugitive convict, the Athens-Macedonia News Agency reported on Wednesday.
According to the AMNA, the Greek woman tried to slip through passport control at the border on Monday.

Court rules in favor of extradition of cybercrime suspect to Russia
A council of appeals in Thessaloniki on Monday accepted a Russian request for the extradition of Alexander Vinnik, a former bitcoin operator who Moscow accuses of cyberattacks against Russian banks resulting in damages of around 750 million roubles.
This was a supplementary request from Russia, after another court in 2017 said he should be extradited to Russia for a fraud case.
Ex Thessaloniki mayor gets 8-year term following release on health grounds
Former Thessaloniki mayor Vassilis Papageorgopoulos and Michalis Lemousias, who served as the local authority's general secretary, were each sentenced on Friday by a Thessaloniki court to eight years in prison for money laundering related to the embezzlement of municipal funds.
The two were allowed to walk free pending their appeals.

Russian authorities have sent a new extradition request to Greece for a Russian cybercrime suspect also sought on criminal charges by the US and France.
Alexander Vinnik, 38, a former bitcoin platform operator, was informed of the new Russian request by Thessaloniki court officials Wednesday, and is not contesting it.
