Tributes poured in on Monday from Greece's political leadership at news of the death of Greek-American senator Paul Sarbanes, a Maryland Democrat who served in the US Congress for more than three decades. 

Archbishop Elpidophoros of America said he mourns the death of Paul Sarbanes, a Maryland Democrat who served in the US Congress for more than three decades, calling him "a true giant of the omogeneia (diaspora) and the nation."

The American Hellenic Educational Progressive Association said it "mourned profoundly" the death of Paul Sarbanes, a Maryland Democrat who served in the US Congress for more than three decades, describing him as a "titan" of the Greek-American community.

President Katerina Sakellaropoulou on Monday tweeted her condolences on the death of Paul Sarbanes, a Maryland Democrat who served in the US Congress for more than three decades, describing him as a "staunch supporter of Greek interests until the end."

Greece's Foreign Ministry has expressed its "sadness" over the death of former US Senator and prominent member of the Greek American community, Paul Sarbanes.

Paul Sarbanes, a Maryland Democrat who served in the US Congress for more than three decades, helped clean up the Chesapeake Bay and corporate scandals and pressured Richard Nixon to resign as president, died on Sunday at 87.

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis on Monday offered his condolences for the death of Greek-American Paul Sarbanes, a Maryland Democrat who served in the US Congress for more than three decades.

International pressure on Ankara aimed at containing its expansive foreign policy was further intensified this week with the US defense budget bill for 2021, which foresees sanctions against Turkey over its acquisition of Russian S-400 missiles. 

In 1974-75, Turkey found itself in a very difficult position. The US Congress imposed an arms embargo on Ankara in reaction to Turkey's invasion of Cyprus. But Ankara did not stay idle in this crucial sector for too long. It made the decision to establish its own sector from scratch.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in a letter to President Donald Trump he hoped the US Congress would better understand the strategic importance of their relations, given solidarity and supplies shared during the coronavirus pandemic.
