Vukovar hospital

Ivica Husnik, who was convicted in Serbia of involvement in the killings of some 200 people at Ovcara Farm near Vukovar in November 1991, was extradited to Croatia on July 7 to serve his sentence for a different crime, Osijek County Court confirmed on Monday.

Today marks the 30th anniversary of the fall of the Croatian city of Vukovar into the hands of the former Yugoslav army. The city was captured after a three-month siege and virtually destroyed to the ground by round-the-clock bombing. The first war crimes in Europe after the end of the Second World War were committed here.

Vukovar was still in ruins when Anamarija Sivric started working as a tour guide there, not long after the town was reintegrated into Croatia.

At the time, Sivric recalled, "Vukovar was Hiroshima".

Thousands of people from all over Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, as well as Croats from abroad, came to the eastern Croatian town of Vukovar on Saturday to commemorate the fall of the town in 1991 and mourn its victims.

A row has broken out about abortion rights after a Catholic inititiative in Croatia, "40 Days for Life", started its annual campaign of public prayers in front of hospitals, campaigning against abortion and for the life of unborn children.

BELGRADE - The Appellate Court in Belgrade sentenced Petar Ciric, former member of the Vukovar Territorial Defence, to 15 years in prison for participating in the war crime at the Ovcara farm near Vukovar where a least 193 prisoners of war, members of the Croatian Armed Forces, were tortured and killed on November 21, 1991.
