Romanian athlete Alexandru Mihaita Novac advanced to the final of the men's javelin throw event on Wednesday at the Olympic Games in Tokyo, with a throw of 83.27 metres. Novac managed to throw the spear 83.27 m in his first attempt, his best performance this season, finishing fourth in Group A and seventh overall. In qualification, Indian Neeraj Chopra had the best throw, 86.65 metres.

The Romanian athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympics are treated to spartan conditions in the Matsudo pre-Olympic camp, where they have to observe a total quarantine and strictly follow the organizers' Covid-19 rules. "We arrived in Matsudo around midnight, after a stopover in Istanbul and another 11 hours of flight.

The Romanian Olympic and Sports Committee (COSR) presented on Sunday evening Team Romania for the Tokyo Olympic Games (July 23 - August 8) which includes 100 athletes - 45 women and 55 in men - who will be competing in 17 sports.

Romania finished fourth in the final medal ranking of the Balkan Athletics Championships 2019 in Pravets, Bulgaria, on Tuesday, with a tally of 18 medals, 5 gold, 8 silver and 5 bronze medals. Ukraine took the first place, 9-4-5, followed by Greece, 6-6-2, and Turkey, 6-3-7. In the men's events, Romania finished second, 4-3-2, behind Ukraine, 7-1-3, and ahead of Turkey, 3-1-5, etc.

Romania won seven medals - two gold, two silver and three bronze - on Monday, the first day of the Balkan Athletics Championships 2019 in Pravets, Bulgaria.
