FM attends UN Economic and Social Council meeting

NEW YORK -- Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Ivica Dačić is in New York where he is attending a two-day meeting of the UN Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC).

He met with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and UN Development Program Administrator Helen Clark on Monday.

Bulgaria nominates Bokova for UN Secretary General

The Bulgarian government has nominated Irina Bokova, the current director-general of UNESCO, to be the next Secretary General of the United Nations, after the second mandate of Ban Ki-Moon expires in 2016.

It is the turn of Eastern Europe to lead the world organisation, and Bokova is seen as well-placed. She may also become the first woman to take the post.

Climate talks: 'Raise your voice, not sea level': UN

The United Nations seized World Environment Day Thursday to demand action on climate change to protect small island states threatened by rising seas, drought and floods.
      
"We have very, very alarming news from science," UN climate chief Christiana Figueres told reporters in Bonn at a new round of talks on global warming.
