Oscar-winning "Parasite" filmmaker Bong Joon-ho and other South Korean stars called for an investigation on Friday into police and media conduct in the days leading to actor Lee Sun-kyun's death.

Lee, best known globally for his starring role in Bong's 2019 film "Parasite", was found dead in a car in Seoul last month, after a two-month police investigation over suspected drug use.

South Korean actor Lee Sun-kyun, best known for his role in the Oscar-winning film "Parasite", was found dead Wednesday in an apparent suicide, Yonhap news agency reported.

The actor was discovered inside a vehicle at a park in central Seoul, Yonhap reported, citing police.

This year's Emmy contenders will be unveiled Tuesday, with "Squid Game" tipped to become the first non-English-language drama series ever nominated at television's equivalent of the Oscars.

Filmmaker Park Chan-wook, known for his ultra-violent thrillers that helped catapult South Korean cinema onto the global stage, is back with an altogether different work, a restrained yet deeply emotional love story.

Julia Ducournau's "Titane," a wild body-horror thriller featuring sex with a car and a surprisingly tender heart, won the Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival on Saturday, news wires reported. Ducournau became the second female filmmaker to win the festival's top honor in its 74 year history.

Chloe Zhao's "Nomadland" won this year's top Hollywood directing award on April 10 - the final major guild ceremony before the Oscars, and an important late bellwether in Tinseltown's pandemic-delayed and mainly virtual award season.

The unprecedented Oscar haul for South Korean director Bong Joon-ho black comedy "Parasite" has shattered a 92-year-old glass ceiling and opened a new era for Korean and other foreign films on the global stage.

Does art imitate life or does life imitate art?

Clearly both may very well be true and one does not preclude the other.

The key issue is to what extent artists express and record the pulse of their era while at the same time highlighting parallel truths that are diachronically combined with a distinctive aesthetic result.

This year's historic Oscars were watched by the award show's smallest ever audience, with just 23.6 million viewers tuning in to ABC's domestic television broadcast.    

The glitzy show in Hollywood on Feb. 9 night saw "Parasite" become the first-ever non-English-language film to scoop best picture, the movie industry's biggest prize.
