Lawyers end strike, back in courtrooms on Monday

BELGRADE -- Serbian lawyers will call off their strike after four months and start working on Monday, said President of the Bar Association of Serbia Dragoljub Djordjevic.

BELGRADE - Serbian lawyers will call off strike after four months and get back to courtrooms on Monday, Dragoljub Djordjevic, president of the Serbian Bar Chamber (AKS), said on Thursday.

BELGRADE - The Assembly of the Bar Association of Serbia (AKS) decided on Monday that attorneys will continue their nationwide strike with the same demands, calling for changes in the notary public Law, lump-sum taxation scheme and resignation of the justice minister.

The head of the Montenegrin Bar Association, Zdravko Begovic, said action will be taken against any Montenegrin attorneys taking advantage of the strike by Serbian lawyers to represent suspects before courts in Belgrade.

BELGRADE - President of the Bar Association of Serbia (AKS) Dragoljub Djordjevic said Thursday that the lawyers' strike would carry on and that the AKS had asked for help from European institutions, but voiced hope that the lawyers would have enough energy to resume negotiations with the Serbian government.

SREMSKI KARLOVCI - Officials of bar organisations and participants of an international roundtable on problems related to the lawyer profession and its relations with notaries public adopted on Tuesday a resolution on the protection of the independence of the lawyer profession in Serbia.

BELGRADE - Lawyers staged a protest in downtown Belgrade on Tuesday under the slogan "One Minute to 12", sending out a clear message that their strike, which started on September 17, will not end until the amendments to the Law on Notaries Public are adopted.

BELGRADE - A meeting between Serbia's Justice Minister Nikola Selakovic and representatives of the lawyers' community at the Bar Association of Serbia ended without an agreement.
