Lawyers end strike, back in courtrooms on Monday

BELGRADE -- Serbian lawyers will call off their strike after four months and start working on Monday, said President of the Bar Association of Serbia Dragoljub Djordjevic.

"This decision was made by the AKS Managing Board at a session in Subotica after the amendments to the Law on Notary Public were published in the Official Gazette of the Republic of Serbia," Djordjevic told reporters after the session of the AKS Managing Board.

Serbian MPs adopted on Wednesday the amendments to the Law on Notary Public and a set of accompanying laws, which created the conditions to unblock the work of the judiciary.

Djordjevic thanked the layers for their consistency, adding that the road to justice is lengthy and thorny, and expressed hope that the authorities have recognized the importance of the practice of law.

He also thanked citizens and apologized for the consequences of the strike.

"One battle has been won in the war for the rule of law," Djordjevic said.

The lawyers began the strike on September 17.
