Intelligence is an essential component of survival in international politics; all states attempt to spy on others. In modern times, information has included not only survival and security, but also trade tactics, economic policy and technological advancements, as well as anything remotely concerning the interests of the states that have become part of the so-called espionage games.

The Guardian, which I think is the best newspaper of the U.K., printed a series in June 2013 that shook the world. The source of the news stories was Edward Snowden, an American born in 1983. Snowden was working at a sub-contractor of the National Security Agency (NSA), the worldwide electronic intelligence agency of the U.S.

Exactly two weeks after summoning German Ambassador to Ankara Eberhard Pohl over electronic spying claims, the Turkish Foreign Ministry yesterday summoned the U.S. chargé d’affaires in Ankara, Jess Bailey, over similar claims. They demanded the U.S. stop spying on Turkey at once, “if the claims are true.”

Russia grants Snowden three-year residence permit

Fugitive US intelligence operative Edward Snowden has been granted a three-year residence permit in Russia, his Russian lawyer said at a press conference Thursday.
     
"The request was accepted and accordingly Edward Snowden was given a three-year residence permit" which allows him to move about freely and travel abroad, lawyer Anatoly Kucherena told journalists.
