Turkey's opposition HDP calls for joint struggle for jailed deputies

Turkey's opposition Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) has called for a "joint struggle" to stop what it called the "elimination of politicians and democratic politics." 
The party released the "Democratic Solution Declaration" with nine articles, featuring "urgent democratic demands."

President Erdoğan calls Turkey's jailed opposition co-chair Demirtaş a 'terrorist'

Speaking at a meeting in Hamburg at the end of the G-20 summit on July 8, President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan has called Selahattin Demirtaş, the jailed co-chair of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), a "terrorist."

"We don't have the authority to release terrorists from jail," Erdoğan said in a press conference, upon a reporter's question regarding "Demirtaş and Kurdish lawmakers."

Jailed HDP co-chair Demirtaş does not attend hearing after refusing to be handcuffed

The jailed co-chair of the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP), Selahattin Demirtaş, did not attend a hearing of his trial on July 7 after refusing to be handcuffed.

Demirtaş has been kept in a prison in the northwestern province of Edirne since Nov. 4, 2016, and his request to attend the hearing in Ankara was accepted on June 30.

HDP to hold extraordinary congress

The Kurdish issue-focused Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) will hold an extraordinary congress on May 20 to fulfill its legal procedures and elect a new co-chair to replace the jailed Figen Yüksekdağ, who lost her parliament seat in February and party membership in March after being sentenced to 10 months in jail on terror-related charges.

Opposition HDP deputy Özkan arrested by court in Turkey's Muş

A deputy from the Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) was arrested on charges of "being a member of a terrorist organizations" on April 19 in the eastern Anatolian province of Muş, Doğan News Agency has reported.

Burcu Çelik Özkan, a HDP deputy for the province, was detained by police during a routine traffic stop on April 19.
