The head of centrist To Potami, Stavros Theodorakis, is expected to formally announce on Friday his running for the leadership of a new center-left party that will be formed in October.

Thanasis Theocharopoulos, leader of the minor Democratic Left (DIMAR) party, has said he will announce next week if he will run for the leadership of Greece's nascent center-left party.

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis has officially announced his candidacy for Greece's a new center-left political party that aspires to establish itself between SYRIZA and New Democracy.

"The country needs a radical change of political orientation that only a big progressive democratic party can guarantee," Kaminis told a press conference in Athens on Monday.

Stavros Theodorakis, leader of the centrist To Potami party, has suggested that he will run for the leadership of Democratic Alignment in elections scheduled for October.

Potential contenders in the Democratic Alignment leadership election will have to declare their candidacy by September 15, Kathimerini reports, adding that campaigning will last for six weeks.

PASOK leader Fofi Gennimata has welcomed news that Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis plans to stand against her in the elections for the leadership of a new center-left grouping. "Greece needs a united and strong center-left," Gennimata told Ta New newspaper.

Democratic Alignment has said that it welcomes the news that Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis intends to run against its incumbent leader, Fofi Gennimata, in party leadership elections in October. "Kaminis is welcome to the battle, as is every candidacy that adds to, and doesn't take away from the effort to create a new movement of the center-left," the party said in an announcement.

Athens Mayor Giorgos Kaminis and the head of the Athens Traders' Association, Stavros Kafounis, have filed suit against all parties involved over the destruction of 67 shop windows on commercial Ermou Street on July 17 by self-styled anarchists.
