Maceo Parker | Athens | March 9 & 10

Celebrating more than 50 years on the music scene, legendary alto sax master Maceo Parker comes to Athens with his six-member band for two shows on the main stage of Gazarte. Parker has been an inspiration for artists such as James Brown and Prince, is considered to have put funk music on the map and is the main representative of the legacy of funk and soul music today.

Athens-born Congolese singer and musician Jerome Kaluta performs a gig at Stavros tou Notou on Wednesday, April 11, that covers a range of uplifting music, from Papa Wemba, Manu Dibango and James Brown to New York hip-hop, Mardi Grass dance tunes and Cuban music. Admission costs 12 euros and includes a complimentary drink. Doors open at 9.30 p.m. 

Martha High | Athens | November 3-6

Soul diva Martha High comes to Greece for a short residency at the Half Note Jazz Club with the Soul Cookers band. The vocalist broke out on the gospel and jazz scene in the 1960s after going on tour with James Brown as a backing singer, and went on to perform with some of the greatest names of the genre, later evolving into disco and funk.

Fred Wesley's 3 Generations | Athens | To December 5

The Half  Note Jazz Club in Athens presents American jazz and funk trombonist Fred Wesley and his band in a residency running through Monday, December 5. Wesley has collaborated with leading funk and soul artists, including James Brown. Shows take place at 10.30 p.m. on Saturday and at 9.30 p.m. on Sunday and Monday. Admission ranges from 20 to 35 euros.
