French Prime Minister Michel Barnier's hard-won new government faced pressure from day one on Sunday, as it came under fire from opponents on both the left and far right, which are now the largest blocs in parliament.

Thousands of left-wing demonstrators on Sept. 7 took to the streets across France to protest against the nomination of the centre-right Michel Barnier as prime minister and denounce President Emmanuel Macron's "power grab."

Protests took place in Paris as well as other cities including Nantes in the west, Nice and Marseille in the south and Strasbourg in the east.

Amidst a political crisis, France continues to swirl with Macron’s efforts to forge alliances, as the early parliamentary elections have caused strong reactions in the country’s political landscape, weakening the power of the French president, according to Bloomberg.

Gabriel Attal visited Macron’s office at noon to submit his resignation, as he had announced the previous day. The president of France has the authority to accept or reject the Prime Minister’s resignation.
